Ben Gurion Airport (also referred by the Hebrew acronyms “Natbag” or “Namal Hate’ufa Ben-Gurion”) is Israel’s main international airport for people and freight traffic, and also the largest and the busiest. It is located near the town of Lod, on highway 1, the main Jerusalem – Tel Aviv highway
Ben Gurion Airport is considered one of the most secured airports in the world, since the airport has been a target of several terrorist attacks. The airport’s security force includes police officers, IDF soldiers and Israel Border Police. However, no attempt to hijack a plane departing from the airport has succeeded.
The airport was built in 1936 during the British Mandatory Palestine, and began as an airstrip of four concrete runways near of the town of Lod. Historically known as Wilhelma Airport, its name was changed to Lod Airport with the creation of Israel in 1948, it was later renamed to Ben Gurion International Airport in 1973 in honor of Israel’s first Prime Minister- David Ben Gurion.
Today, it handles more than 20 million passengers every year. El-Al, Israir and Arkia Airlines all use Ben Gurion as a hub, but there are also many other European and North American airlines that offer flights to Ben Gurion International Airport.
Ben Gurion Airport comprises four levels: Level 3 is used for departures; the travelers arrive directly to this level. Level 2 is used for public transportation. Level G is used for incoming and outgoing travelers. This level hosts the reception hall. Level S hosts the train station. It also holds 4 large passenger terminals. Terminal 3 is the main international gateway to and from Israel, replaced Terminal 1.
The ground transportation of Ben Gurion Airport is accessible by cars, public buses, taxies and Israel Railways.
Parking spaces are available both for short and long terms. Israel Railways operates train service to and from the airport to certain parts of the country, and taxi stands are located outside the arrivals building.
